Stop the Itching Now! – Athlete’s Foot Treatment

by | Oct 5, 2015

Fall is a great time for sports! The Geneva High School student athletes have been working hard in practices and the results are showing on the fields, courts, and trails. When it comes to athletic events, there are many potential injuries that can happen. If you were unfamiliar with the condition, you might hear the term “athlete’s foot” and think it is some kind of injury sustained during physical activity. Of course, we know that this is actually a common fungal infection. It can be irritating, but athlete’s foot treatment can take care of that!

Also known as tinea pedis, athlete’s foot is caused by a fungus that thrives in damp, warm environments, like those found in feet that are covered by socks and shoes! The infection is contagious and often spread from contact with contaminated items or surfaces (towels, shoes, floors, etc.) or infected individuals.

Athlete’s foot treatment will typically begin with an over-the-counter antifungal spray, powder, lotion, or ointment. When you purchase any of these products, make sure you follow the instructions listed on the package. Many individuals begin to feel relief from the symptoms and stop using the antifungal agent before the situation is fully remedied.

If you have followed the instructions carefully for an over-the-counter product and are still experiencing the condition, you may need prescription-strength medications that are particularly effective at treating fungal infections. We can prescribe either topical or oral medication that will clear up the condition.

There is a good chance that an over-the-counter product is all the athlete’s foot treatment you need, but Prairie Path Podiatry is here to help for more severe cases. If you haven’t been able to find the relief you need, give us a call at (630) 845-3338 or fill out our online form to schedule your appointment at our Geneva, IL office today.
